How VA combined ratings are calculated
VA disability ratings are not added together. A 50% and a 30% rating do not make 80%. The VA applies each rating to the remaining non-disabled portion of the body, in descending order of severity, then rounds to the nearest 10%.
Worked example: a 50% rating leaves 50% remaining. A 30% rating applied to that remaining 50% adds 15%, for 65%. A 10% rating applied to the remaining 35% adds 3.5%, for 68.5%. The VA rounds 68.5% to a 70% combined rating, which pays $1,808.45 per month for a veteran with no dependents in 2026.
The bilateral factor
If you have service-connected conditions affecting both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles, the VA applies a bilateral factor. It first combines those ratings, then adds 10% of that combined value before combining the result with your other ratings. For example, a 10% rating for each knee combines to 19%; the bilateral factor adds 1.9%, for 20.9%, which is then combined with any other ratings.
